Metro,
a newspaper in London, broke the news on July
13, 2010. The headline reads, "'The chicken came
first, not the egg', scientists prove."
British researchers found that ovocledidin-17
(OC-17), a protein found in chickens' ovaries,
is necessary for the formation of eggs.
"It had long been suspected that the egg came
first, but now we have the scientific proof that
shows that in fact the chicken came first," Dr.
Colin Freeman said, a professor from Sheffield
University who worked on the study.
The Bible is Scientifically Accurate
Discovering that the chicken came before the egg
is shocking to people who put their faith in scientific
theories rather than the Bible. But to Christians,
this is just another instance of science catching
up with what we already know from God's word.
The Biblical account of God creating birds tells
us the chicken came before the egg.
- "Then God said, 'Let the waters teem with
swarms of living creatures, and let birds
fly above the earth in the open expanse of the
heavens.' God created the great sea monsters
and every living creature that moves, with which
the waters swarmed after their kind, and every
winged bird after its kind; and God saw that
it was good. God blessed them, saying, 'Be
fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters
in the seas, and let birds multiply on the
earth.' There was evening and there was
morning, a fifth day" (Gen. 1:20-23).
Notice that God created birds that flew the
day they were created, and were mature enough
to reproduce. God did not create eggs.
And besides, common sense tells us the chicken
had to come before the egg, because there had
to be a chicken to sit on the egg.
Other Examples of the Bible's Scientific Accuracy
People more educated than me have put together
lists of Scriptures showing the scientific accuracy
of the Bible. So, I'll just mention two of the
more obvious ones here.
At one time, men thought the earth was flat.
But as scientific knowledge increased, the flat
earth theory was disproved and the Bible was proved
to be scientifically accurate. Today, science
agrees with the Bible. The earth is circular,
and is suspended in space (Job 26:7; 40:22).
God's Word First, Scientific Theories Second
This latest discovery reminds us to believe God's
word first, and scientific theories second.
Many things still separate Christians from prevalent
scientific theory.
For example, we believe God created the universe
from nothing, by speaking it into existence. Man
did not evolve over millions and billions of years,
but was instantly created by God, through the
power of His word.
So when science contradicts God's word, we must
believe God rather than human theories.
You'll Suffer Persecution
Everyone who wishes to live godly in Christ Jesus
will suffer persecution (2 Tim. 3:12). Whenever
we put God first, and the ideas of men second,
we will suffer persecution.
Just as people persecuted Galileo for saying
the earth was round, we'll be persecuted for believing
God's word and rejecting theories that contradict
it.
And remember, Galileo was persecuted by the
Roman Catholic church, not a scientific organization.
So, we too must be prepared for persecution by
religious organizations that merely tickle the
ears of the ungodly to gain power.
As a result of suffering persecution for believing
God's word, we'll be blessed.
- "Blessed are those who have been persecuted
for the sake of righteousness, for theirs
is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are
you when people insult you and persecute
you, and falsely say all kinds of evil
against you because of Me. Rejoice and be
glad, for your reward in heaven is great;
for in the same way they persecuted the prophets
who were before you" (Matt. 5:10-12).
Vindication
Times like this, when many in the scientific community
are shocked by a discovery disproving a theory
concerning the beginning of life, vindicate God
and our faith in His word.
We do not glory in ourselves, but glory that
our God's word is proven to be right, and superior
to human theory.
I pray people will open their eyes and see the
truth, confessing their sins in obedience to God.
But that's rarely the case. Paul, speaking of
the foolishness of those who reject the truth
of God's word, says:
- "For since the creation of the world His
invisible attributes, His eternal power and
divine nature, have been clearly seen, being
understood through what has been made, so that
they are without excuse. For even though
they knew God, they did not honor Him as
God or give thanks, but they became futile in
their speculations, and their foolish heart
was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became
fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible
God for an image in the form of corruptible
man and of birds and four-footed animals and
crawling creatures. Therefore God gave them
over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity,
so that their bodies would be dishonored among
them. For they exchanged the truth of God
for a lie, and worshiped and served the
creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed
forever. Amen" (Rom. 1:20-25).
Obey God's Word
Scientific accuracy of the Bible reminds us that
God's word is absolute truth (Jn. 17:17).
As such, we must obey God's word to please Him,
and be saved from our sins.
