Andrew and John (the apostle) were with John the baptizer when
Jesus was walking near them. John the baptizer said "Behold
the Lamb of God" (Jn. 1:36)! John and Andrew heard the Baptizer
and followed Jesus.
Then Jesus turned around and saw that Andrew and John were following
Him. He asked: "What do you seek" (Jn. 1:38)? Andrew and
John said: "Rabbi, . . . where are You staying" (Jn. 1:38)?
Then Jesus said: "Come and see" (Jn. 1:39).
Andrew and John called Jesus their Rabbi denoting that they considered
Him their Master and Teacher. As their Teacher, they had turned
their life over to Him - obediently following His commands and teachings.
Andrew and John were seeking where their Teacher was staying so
that they could learn from Him. And, knowing where He was staying,
they could bring others to Him (Jn. 1:41).
Later in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said: "Ask, and it
will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will
be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks
finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there
among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then,
being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much
more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those
who ask Him" (Matt. 7:7-12).
You and I must be like Andrew and John. We must be seeking to live
according to God's will. We must make it a lifelong priority to
learn, understand, and accomplish God's will. Andrew and John actively
pursue Jesus; and we must actively pursue Jesus.
Seeking to know where Jesus was staying, Jesus commands: "Come
and see." Today, Jesus invites all men to Come and see God
and His Son Jesus Christ in the Scriptures. John recorded some of
the signs of Jesus so that we may "believe that Jesus is the
Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in
His name" (Jn. 20:31). Paul said that the gospel is God's power
to salvation for everyone who believes (Rom. 1:16). And, "faith
comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Rom. 10:17).
You and I do not see Jesus upon the earth as did the apostles and
others during His life. But, we see Jesus by faith. After Thomas
touched Jesus' resurrected body, Jesus said: "Thomas, because
you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have
not seen and yet have believed" (Jn. 20:29).
Are you like Andrew and John? Are you seeking Jesus to do His will?
Have you received Jesus as your Master to explicitly obey His commands
and live according to His teachings?
