Sowing and Reaping: Part II
Bible study on sowing and reaping.

In Part I, we considered the universal axiom set in order by God: We reap what we sow (Gal. 6:7- 9).

In this article, I would like to consider a few aspects of this axiom revealed within the word of God.

  • If we sow wickedness, we will reap the same (Job 4:8). If we sow iniquity, we reap sorrow (Pr. 22:8). Sometimes we say: What goes around comes around. People who are wicked (engaged in lawless practices) will reap wickedness and lawlessness.
  • We should sow all the time (Ec. 11:3-6). Although we should sow with wisdom (Ec. 10:8-10) we should not be consumed with worry over things which we cannot control. We cannot allow ourselves to become paralyzed by fear.
  • God chastens us when we do not turn from sin (Heb. 12:3-11). One way that God chastens His people is by preventing us from reaping the fruits of nature (Mic. 6:15-16).
  • The fruit of righteousness is sown in peace (Jas. 3:18). A person sowing the seed producing righteousness is known by his good conduct. His works are done in the meekness of wisdom (Jas. 3:13). ". . . the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy" (Jas. 3:17).
  • If we sow sparingly we will reap sparingly; and if we sow bountifully we will reap bountifully (2 Cor. 9:6). We must sow as we have purposed in our hearts, not grudgingly or of necessity because God loves a cheerful giver (2 Cor. 9:7). God is the One who supplies the seed. Our job is to sow the seed which God provides (2 Cor. 9:8-11).
  • If we sow to the flesh we reap the works of the flesh; and if we sow to the Spirit we reap the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:16-26). We can look at our lives to see whether we are sowing to the flesh or the Spirit. If we are reaping evil things it is because we are sowing evil things.
  • God is not mocked. If we sow to the flesh we will reap corruption (eternal damnation); and if we sow to the Spirit we will reap everlasting life (Gal. 6:7-8). We cannot deceive God. We may be able to deceive other people and even delude ourselves into believing a lie. But, God is not deceived.
  • Therefore, we cannot grow weary in doing good (Gal. 6:9). If we do not loose heart, we will reap in due season. Therefore we should do good to all, especially those of the household of faith.

Are you sowing to the flesh or to the Spirit? What will you reap at the end of this life - corruption or everlasting life? If you are sowing wickedness and lawlessness, now is the day to change. "Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation" (2 Cor. 6:2).
